5 simple tricks for transitioning your wardrobe

As summer fades away, and the crisp fall air begins to roll in, it's time to start thinking about transitioning our wardrobe. In fashion, this can be an awkward season. The weather isn't quite ready for heavy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes (even though we are), but we can start thinking about the next season with a simple wardrobe refresh.

The key to a seamless shift from summer to fall fashion lies in making the most of what you already have while incorporating some key pieces to keep you stylish and comfortable. If there is one thing we have learned from living in the midwest, it's that seasons change hard and fast. The first fall chill will be here before we know it! Being prepared with go-to basics, elevated layers, and a few staple pieces will give you so much confidence for fall. Here are five easy tips to help you transition your summer styles into the fall season!

Tip One: Take Inventory of Your Wardrobe
Before you start adding new pieces to your wardrobe, it's essential to assess what you already have. Begin by sorting through your summer clothes. What styles can you layer into the fall, and what styles can you stow away until next year?

Next, take a closer look at the lightweight fabrics you own. Anything linen, cotton, or rayon are made for the summer heat. Short dresses and shorts can be swapped out for slightly heavier alternatives, think long sleeve tops, denim jeans, and go-to layers. Lastly, set aside items you won't wear again.

Make things easier: have two sorting bins, one for donation and another for storage. By doing this, you'll create space and a clearer view of your options.

Now, do the same with your fall clothes from last year. Is there anything in your wardrobe that you can wear now? Keep the heavier stuff tucked away until the temps really begin to drop. This step will help you get ready in the morning without the stress, plus you can identify the gaps in your wardrobe. When it's time to shop, you will know the specific pieces you'll need to invest in for the upcoming season.

Tip Two: Stock Up on Basics
We probably sound like a broken record, but basics are ESSENTIAL! You can wear them all year, styled so many different ways. Every good fall wardrobe is built on a foundation of versatile basics. Ensure your closet is well-stocked with key pieces like dark wash denim, wide-leg styles that pair well with boots, and basic layering tees and tanks. Our Scout Tees, Mae Tees, and Breanna Binding Tanks are some of our favorite options. These timeless items act as a canvas for your fall ensembles and effortlessly pair with jackets, cardigans, and scarves. Lightweight button ups are a great option as well!

Some of our favorite boot friendly denim styles include, the Emily Wide Leg Pants, Skylar High Rise Bootcut Jeans, and our Sunny Dark Wash Boot Cut Denim. It's no secret wide leg jeans are trending and these styles are some of the most comfortable jeans to choose from.

Investing in quality basics not only extends the life of your wardrobe, but also allows you to experiment with various fall pieces. Now let's incorporate some layers!

Tip Three: Embrace Layers - Jackets, Blazers, and Cardigans
Fall weather can be unpredictable, with chilly mornings, warm afternoons, and evenings that drop down again. Layering is the ultimate solution to stay comfortable and stylish. You can wear your summer tees and tanks, but be prepared for changing temps with jackets, cardigans, and blazers.

Because these pieces layer over so many looks, we suggest investing in great pieces you love. Whether that's a classic denim jacket, like our Dee Denim Jacket and Z SUPPLY All Day Knit Denim, or a classic Kate Cardigan. Maybe you prefer a more professional look. In that case, a go-to blazer is the perfect add-on. These layers not only keep you warm but also add texture and depth to your outfits. Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles and textures to create eye-catching looks!

Tip Four: Transition to Fall Colors
As the leaves change colors, so should your wardrobe. Start incorporating fall hues into your outfits, such as warm browns, earthy olives, neutrals, and classic black. If the weather is still warm, leaning into styles with these colors will extend your summer to fall wardrobe. For instance, we love pairing an olive wide leg pant with a classic black tank. The colors read fall, but are still lightweight enough for the heat. Jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, and magenta are also popular choices for fall. Our Claire Roundneck Sweaters are an easy option for a splash of color.

You don't have to completely ditch your summer colors, though. Instead, find ways to combine them with fall shades. For example, pair a mustard yellow top with dark wash denim or a summer floral dress with a denim jacket. Below we have our new Z SUPPLY Nicola Button Up. The color is totally fall, but the fabric is the perfect weight for in-between seasons.

Step Five: Don't Forget the Accessories
Accessories can make or break an outfit, and fall is the perfect time to embrace them. Swap your sandals for chic sneakers. Add hats, belts, or a stylish handbag to finish off your look. Summer is all about lightweight, easy styles, while fall can be more intentional. It's the best season to experiment with different looks and accessories make that even easier.

Ready to get your wardrobe fall ready?
Transitioning your summer styles to fall doesn't have to be a daunting task. By following these five simple steps, you can curate a stylish and versatile fall wardrobe that makes the most of what you already have while incorporating new key pieces.
