Women of Style- August 2016

Name:  Kristin Cadwallader

Where are you from:  Rock Island, Illinois

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am a 37-year-old designer and blogger located in the Quad-Cities. I founded my blog Bliss at Home (www.bliss-athome.com) in June of 2012 to start on a creative journey and it blossomed into my now career.

My background is in art & design and way back in college (wow! 17 years ago!!), I picked up an Interior Design course as a needed elective. I immediately fell in love with all things design. After adding more interior design courses to my course load, it was clear that this was something I wanted to explore more.

I moved back to Rock Island in 2001 to plan my wedding and married my Dave in 2002. Soon after, we didn’t waste any time starting our family and I chose to stay-at-home. I was really excited and ready to become a mom. I have been blessed with a very supportive husband and two wonderful boys. At the time, I had been out of the work force for quite a few years. Once my youngest was a bit older, I decided to try my hand at blogging to see if I could turn it into a business and get my foot in the design world.

I had no idea how awesome of a journey this blog would be or the doors it would open. I still feel quite grateful and lucky at all that has come from it.  After 4 years of blogging professionally, I have had some really great “pinch me” moments. My work and blog have been featured in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, HGTV magazine, and USA Today. My design work has been shared on media outlets like Elle Décor, Harper’s Bazaar, and House Beautiful.  I’ve connected with some amazing creatives and emerged into the design industry through my blog. How crazy is that for a girl living in Rock Island, Illinois!

Good things keep coming as I work and blog my spaces. Domino magazine just listed me in their “10 Up & Coming Designers to Follow Now”. That was a totally amazing surprise and to get that acclaim by one of my all-time favorite design magazines has made me dream even bigger with my future endeavors.

I am a total believer in dreaming big. I believe that if you have the talent, passion, and drive you can make the unbelieveable happen. None of the things that have happened in my design and blog career came easily though. I’ve worked my tail off and had to study and learn so much these past 4 years. There have been a lot of deadlines, late nights, and weekends that had to be dedicated to work. I’ve also had to travel for the blog and amazing as that is at times, I do miss Dave and kids. I’ve gotten better at the balance part this year, but I am in a more relaxed place with the blog and my design work where I don’t have to work as many hours to make the income I want.

I have so many plans for the future and how to grow my brand and business. I will never regret the choice to stay-at-home when my kids were younger. I cherish that time so much. I am so grateful that my blog and business took off like it did. It was a great way to balance work and family. Now, I am at a place that I will be able to dedicate more time to work during the days and I am excited to see where this journey takes me next.

If you want to keep up with my work and blog you can follow me at www.bliss-athome.com. Also, you can get a peek inside our holiday home in a full feature coming out this fall in the 2016 Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Ideas Magazine.

Describe your style: Traditional meets modern with a little glam rock thrown in for good measure. I really love to mix styles in my spaces. I prefer black and white foundations. I’ve never met a wall moulding I don’t love. French modern is a big inspiration in my work right now. It’s all about creating the right mix of eras and scale for me.

Favorite Place to Shop:  I love high end décor, so if I’m going to shop for a splurge it’s usually online at places like Shop Candelabra or Zinc Door. I am all about the collection and the mix and I frequent thrift stores, vintage shops, flea markets, and antique malls to find the pieces I love. Definitely a treasure seeker at heart.

Favorite sources of Inspiration:  Travel is always such a huge one. When I go someplace new or to a big city, I am always eyeing the older buildings for architectural details. I love restaurant and boutique hotel design so a lot can come from that.

Go to pieces in your closet:  My fall uniform is usually skinny jeans, a good boot or ankle boot, a comfy tee, and a great jacket or sweater. Of course, some arm candy for good measure.

3 beauty must haves:  Water, MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara, and Clinique Moisture Surge Gel.

Fashion Icon:  I have always loved Grace Kelly. Statuesque beauty, glam, always classic.

Preferred method of social media: The blog…obviously, but Instagram is my jam.

You just won an all expense paid trip to anywhere in the world! Where are you going? Maine. I am an East Coast girl at heart. I love traveling up and down the coast of Maine.

Favorite Book: Pride & Prejudice…basically anything Jane Austen.

Favorite Type of Food:  Seafood. Lobster, crab, shrimp, scallops, fish…give me all the seafood.

Favorite City:  Not a city…but Cape Cod area. Martha’s Vineyard and the whole cape.

Favorite Era:  The 60’s. Like the glam moments of 1960’s. I love the clothes, the vibe. Think  The Pink Panther movie (the 1963 one). I could go to glam 60’s Paris or a ski lodge. Love it.
